Virtual History: Roma
Virtual History Roma is a well-developed app that lets you explore ancient Rome as if you were there — thanks to the unique ’bubble viewer’ technology.
This technology (the first of its kind in any application) allows the user to look around the ancient world in 360 degrees, using the iPad as a virtual window.
The app does a great job of showing you how the past compares to the present day by transitioning from one to the other with the touch of a button. For example, a digital restoration of The Colosseum shows you just how spectacular it was, over 2000 years ago.
The app has a lot of content and includes information on emperors, gladiators, places, monuments and the daily lives of citizens.
The app is very visual but it does contain a lot of reading. Every photo gallery and immersive 3D render is accompanied by a long passage of text explaining what you’re viewing.
The app is easy to use, made easier by the guide in the introduction section of the app. It explains what each icon means and how to use hand gestures for interactions. The layout is like a book so most users should be able to navigate it without issue.
