Nat Geo World Atlas
National Geographic have a true love for nature and geography, and are best known for their high quality documentaries and beautiful imagery. This vast knowledge of our planet is put to good use in their highly detailed atlas app — enhanced with the addition of country flags, measurements, facts and figures.
After starting the app, a 3D globe is displayed which can be rotated and zoomed-in as needed. Tapping on a country or city will popup additional information such as the current weather or photos taken from that location. A handy feature (displayed in our featured image) allows you to measure the distance between two points on the map. This is a quick way of putting things into perspective or comparing distances. For example, the longest lake in the world, Lake Tanganyika in Africa, is longer than Glasgow to London. That’s a lot of fresh water!
Unfortunately, the app requires a constant internet connection unless you download the individual maps first. This can be a bit of a problem as the maps are quite big files due to all that wonderful detail.
For a free option, you can always download Google Maps which also adds the ability of 3D cities and virtual tours.
